Introduction

The goal of the project was to design a bakery app where users can order their food in advance. Lucky Bakery is a local bakery in the heart of downtown San José. This family-owned bakery specializes in fresh bread and pastries baked daily. Their target customers are often office workers and college students who are always on the go.

Objective

Design an app for Lucky Bakery that allows returning users to quickly order and pick up their favorite items.

Problem

Busy college students and office workers have to manage their time well. Due to lack of time, they have to prioritize convenience over time-consuming tasks like cooking or standing in line to order food.

Research

I conducted user interviews to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. My goal for this research was to find out what users think about food delivery/pick up app services.

Synthesis

  • The primary user group was people in their 20s who prioritize convenience.

  • Ever since COVID-19, users wants to avoid interactions with people as much as they can when eating out.

Pain Points

  • Some users have limited cooking skills to cook for themselves.

  • Users mainly felt that it wasn’t worth their time to cook at home or eat inside a restaurant.

Usability Study

I have conducted two usability studies. The first usability study helped me solidify the framework of the user flow. The second usability study helped me improve small but important details in the user flow.

Improvements

Before the usability study, I designed to have just the Favorites feature on the home screen. Based on user feedback, I learned that users like the power to choose so I put the menu which includes the “Saved” feature (formerly “Favorites”) on the home screen. This change also clarified the main purpose of the app on the home screen, which the low-fidelity struggled to show.

Before the usability study, the “Favorites” feature was based on customized orders that users would create. Instead of “Favorites,” the “Saved” feature focused on saving individual products including customizations to give more freedom to users.

Improvements #2

Users had trouble finding the “Saved” button right away. I switched the position of the banner and the Menu section so the user can easily spot the “Saved” button on the top. I also increased the font size of the menu buttons to increase readability.

After the second usability study, I discovered that users do not like scrolling for too long. For the product page, I added dropdowns for optional customizations to decrease scrolling for too long.

Conclusion

I focused a lot on the design process for Lucky Bakery. I enjoyed conducting usability studies where I received valuable feedback to improve my designs. Something that I would like to add in the future is more screens and new features or flows for the app.
